My initial impression is that these are an airy, neutral, slightly dry sound, that reminds me a bit of the Sennheiser sound, yet not including the HD560S. No, they aren’t the second coming of HD650. We can all settle down and resume dreaming. They are, however, a pair of decently proficient modern headphones – with one serious flaw. The driver stability was equally convincing. The NDH 30 reproduce even high levels and low bass with little distortion. At the same time, however, they reveal imprecision in the recording. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that I suspect their vestigial softness in the upper midrange might simply represent unaccustomed clarity, rather than a real dip in the frequency response.

To be fair, it must be noted that the measurement diagram does not show a straight line. This would also be too much to expect for a full-range driver and does not apply to any conventional passive headphones. However, the downwards linearity of 1 kHz is remarkable. Just like with the NDH 20, Neumann engineers are doing wonders with the Sennheiser 40mm (or 38mm?) driver. At 120 Ω , the NDH 30 is a fairly high impedance headphone and performs best when driven by a robust headphone amp. However, it had no issues with entry-level audio interfaces, mixers and keyboards. In each case, the signal was solid without an audible breakup or sounding like the headphones were working too hard. As a result, we didn’t always feel as enveloped in the music as we did with the Austrian Audios. The voice is very amazing, a little dark, and you won't be tired after listening for a long time. I have NDH20 and NDH30 at the same time. Their bass is almost as good in their respective fields (open/closed). NDH20 puts more emphasis on sound insulation and has a depression at the intermediate frequency to prevent ear canal resonance. The NDH30 sounds more like the HD650, but has more accurate bass lines and more details.

All of that is a fancy way of saying that your typical pair of headphones puts more emphasis on the bass and treble because most people react more positively to that type of tuning from a listening pleasure perspective. That doesn’t make them accurate. The N30, is not a V shape. Its soundstage is more wide then deep, as that is necessary for the accuracy.
